Abstract
This thesis investigates the polysemy of the Spanish verb llevar from a cognitive linguistic perspective. Two systematic accounts of polysemy, a Behavioral Profile analysis and the Economic Principled Polysemy Method, were utilized in order to identify the central senses and peripheral senses of llevar. Based on the two analyses, the central sense of llevar is TRANSPORTAR and its nine peripheral senses are QUITAR, MANEJAR, MANTENER, PASAR, REQUERIR, TENER VENTAJA, TENER PUESTO/TENER, CONTENER, and CAERLE + ADVERB (llevarse bien/mal). Included in this thesis are visualizations of the central sense and the semantic network of llevar. The findings from the analysis were incorporated into preliminary pedagogical materials and suggestions to aid in the teaching of the verb.
