Abstract
This study applied the classical item analysis to a regular classroom test in a high school. As the core of the classical item analysis, discrimination indices were the main focus of this study. The purpose of the study was to investigate the relatively dependable and simple discrimination index by comparing some popular discrimination indices based on different internal criteria (i.e., the subtest-total score and the entire-test-total score). The acquisition and comparison of the discrimination indices were fulfilled by means of modern computer programsLertap5 and SPSS. Additionally, the difficulty indices and the distractor analysis were also taken into account as a whole. The data set was collected from an English pretest of the third grade in a high school of China. 1059 students participated in the test, which included 45 multiple choices, 15 fill-in blanks, 5 matchings, and 2 essays. These questions were assigned to four subtests. The discrimination indices (rpbis, rbis, D10%, D27%, D , D ) and their corresponding difficulty indices were compared based on the 33%50%two different internal criteria. As a result, rpbis, D33% and the related ps were recommended to use in the classroom item analysis for the high school teachers.
