Abstract

This study discusses some of the various definitions of the term exile and locates some of these concepts within the work of the Brazilian poet and playwright Ferreira Gullar. It is proposed that, collectively, certain characteristics of these concepts in the work of Gullar can be taken as constituting a literature of exile. After analyzing the category of exile independently, the work of the poet is then explored. During the Brazilian military dictatorship, Gullar lived a clandestine existence while in his own country and later spent time in exile abroad in the 70's. Throughout this period, the author produced many works, including Dentro da noite veloz (1975) and Poema sujo (1975). In addition to these two, the corpus for the present study also includes Rabo de Foguete (1998), a memoir in which Gullar details his experiences during his years of exile. Through an analysis of these works of prose and poetry, it is possible to identify both the presence and absence of exile in Gullars writing.
