Abstract

The ability to properly identify stream channel morphology is an essential tool for all fluvial geomorphologists and river scientists. Research compared measurements fromtraditional stream channel survey to a terrestrial photography technique that evaluatedvariables from stream channels. Statistical results show that a photographic methodologyaccurately measures and describes morphological parameters considered in this study.Classification systems were created to identify dominant bed material and physicalhabitat for the ten vegetative (5 forested/ 5 pastured) streams surveyed. This scientifictechnique was performed on streams in the southern Blue Ridge Mountains near CoweetaLong Term Ecological Research Center.
