Abstract

With the use of survey records of District 9 of historic Irwin County, Georgia, vegetation was reconstructed into a geographic information systems database with the use of witness trees, survey notes, and plat maps. This data was then compared to modern vegetation statistics compiled in the U.S. Forest Services Forest Inventory and Analysis (FIA) in an attempt to evaluate landscape change. Descriptive statistics and detrended correspondence analysis (DCA) were analyzed in order to examine vegetation patterns across the landscape. In addition, 50 meter riparian buffers were implemented to further explore vegetation characteristics.
