Abstract

A molecular phylogenetic analysis was conducted for Latridiidae (Coleoptera: Cucujoidea). Seven genes (18S rDNA, 28S rDNA, 12S rDNA, 16S rDNA, cytochrome oxidase I and II, and histone III) were analyzed. Twenty-seven latridiid species were included, representing both subfamilies. Eight outgroup taxa from other families of Cucujoidea were included. Parsimony and partitioned Bayesian analyses were performed on the combined data set. In both phylogenetic analyses, the enigmatic genus Akalyptoischion (Latridiinae) was recovered outside of Latridiidae. A new family, Akalyptoischionidae fam n. is erected based on the results of the phylogenetic study and anatomical considerations. A revision of the genus Deretaphrus Newman 1842 (Coleoptera: Bothrideridae) is presented. The majority of the worlds holdings for the genus were borrowed and studied. A taxonomic treatment of the genus was conducted. Presented are a key to the species, species descriptions, distribution maps, label data, biological information, and figures and illustrations. Seven new species are described.
