Abstract

The aim of this thesis is to compare the existence of flamenco on the global stage due to exoticism, while also looking at literature on gypsies and how it reflects flamenco. It will also observe the presence of flamenco in Japan and the effects that it produces on a cultural level. In doing this, we can understand how something that seems so different from Japanese culture can become an incredibly popular pastime and career choice. By examining the history of flamenco, analyzing D.M. Figueira’s work on exoticism, and further examining the history of flamenco in Japan, we can observe the role of exoticism and how it is both helpful and detrimental to the survival of a culture’s traditions. We can also investigate how exoticism may lead to the changing of a tradition as it is demonstrated on the global level. The results proved that exoticism was the main factor and reason that Japanese women took up flamenco as a hobby or career. I would like to research in the future how Japanese men view flamenco and how those who practice it came into it. In writing this thesis I aimed to use a variety of sources that not only differed in opinion but language as well. Using Spanish and Japanese sources, I was able to obtain information from the cultures themselves rather than from an outsider’s opinion. This allows me to come as close as speaking to a native about the topic as I could without actually having to travel to Spain or Japan. In using both native and outside sources, I was able to have a more rounded thesis that included the most information possible. By examining multiple sources about exoticism, I have allowed myself and the reader to have the best understanding of exoticism feasible. I also examined literature sources that had differing opinions from myself in order to address the counterargument against my ideas. In doing so, I have covered all grounds to construct the most cohesive thesis possible.
