Abstract
This project identifies philological and thematic links between Apuleius’ Golden Ass and St. Augustine’s Confessions. Both being conversion narratives written by North African Romans, this paper argues that Augustine wrote his Confessions in conversation with Apuleius’ romance. The argument proceeds first by isolating strong links between Augustine’s use of curiositas, then his treatment of speech and silence, and finally disciplinary violence. The philological and thematic links within these three themes, I argue, proves that Augustine composed his conversion narrative borrowing key elements from Apuleius.
