Abstract

The objective of this study was to compare growth performance, feed efficiency, temperament, body composition, and carcass characteristics in Angus steers from bulls divergently selected for feed efficiency and marbling. Sires were selected with high and low residual average daily gain (RADG) EPDs as well as high and average marbling (MARB) EPDs. These criteria resulted in a 2x2 factorial design with four breeding lines:high RADG/high MARB, high RADG/average MARB, low RADG/high MARB, low RADG/average MARB. This study was originally designed to assess the ability of the recently developed RADG EPD to improve feed efficiency, and to evaluate its impacts on other production traits. Improvements in feed efficiency were seen in the high versus low RADG steers. The goal now is with continued selection for feed efficiency using RADG, the divergent lines of cattle can be evaluated to get a better understanding of the biological and physiological mechanisms influencing efficiency.
