Abstract

The purpose of this thesis is to provide a comprehensive history of the Bracero Program and the role that reception centers played in the program through a cultural landscape assessment of the last intact reception center in the United States, Rio Vista Farm. The cultural landscape assessment will consider Rio Vista Farm’s developmental history in its entirety, using the National Park Service’s cultural landscape methodology to document and analyze the site’s landscape characteristics. Through the analysis of characteristics, resources that contain historic significance and integrity in relation to Rio Vista Farm’s Bracero era will be highlighted, and if still extant, will be integrated into an interpretive program for the presentation and interpretation of the site to the public.
