Abstract

The thesis of this paper is as follows: The belief in demonic possession is historically integral to the Christian faith, and the corresponding practice of exorcism is experiencing a modern resurgence. I will address the theology of possession and the practice of exorcism within the context of Christianity, with particular focus on Catholic exorcism and Protestant deliverance. The foundation for this study is developed through a discussion of theodicy and the evolution of adversarial personalities within the Christian tradition. Following this, an examination of the practice of exorcism, its role within the religious experience, its therapeutic benefits and hindrances, its primary controversies, and a few sample cases, will further develop the thesis.
