In recent years, career calling and work engagement have received increased empirical attention. This study considers how viewing ones career as a calling is related to engagement at work, which in turn may positively spillover into a non-work domain. In addition, these relationships are examined in a sample of substance abuse treatment counselors; specifically, recovery status is examined as an important group variable. Results suggest that career calling can spillover into the nonwork domain and this effect is mediated by work engagement, particularly dedication and absorption. In addition, a lack of measurement and structural invariance suggests that the relationships in this study differ according to recovery status. Findings are discussed in terms of theoretical implications as well as future research directions.
