Abstract
Brownfields plague urban areas with numerous problems that go well beyond the specific site boundaries; therefore, it proves imperative that planners have broader and deeper knowledge of these ecological and socioeconomic issues. Through the use of Chatham County as a study area, this thesis provides a brownfield inventorying and suitability analysis methodology using GIS. Much of the methods are based on and improved upon Chrysochoou et al.s precedent study A GIS and indexing scheme to screen brownfields for area-wide redevelopment planning. This thesis shows how a comprehensive brownfield database combined with a suitability analysis can assist urban planners throughout the United States in creating general guidelines and strategies for brownfield redevelopment going beyond simply identifying brownfields without the use of site specific information.
