Abstract
In 2010, after the passing of world-renowned trumpet player and former UGA professor Fred Mills, the Mills family donated a large collection of Mr. Mills music, instruments, and other memorabilia from his musical career to the University of Georgia. This bulk of this collection, which is currently housed in the Hargrett Rare Book & Manuscript Library at the Special Collections Library at the university, is comprised of over 250 boxes of music (both recorded and printed) and other items. The Fred Mills Collection has remained largely untouched since it was donated shortly after Mr. Mills death in 2009. While there are many rare and one-of-a-kind items in this collection, such as Mills original manuscripts of his Canadian Brass arrangements, much of the sheet music in this collection does not need to stay in the Hargrett Library; rather, it would be put to better use in the hands of UGA library patrons. This dissertation includes an overview of the original works of Fred Mills currently housed in the Hargrett Library, including original manuscripts and unpublished works. This project also included the creation of an inventory of nearly 600 sheet music items (including those by Mills) to remain in the Hargrett Library. This inventory will be accessible online in the near future.
