This thesis seeks to examine the transgressive impact that transnational memory has on thmulticultural literature in the post-September 11 era. In Toni Morrisons Song of Solomon and Maxine Hong Kingstons Tripmaster Monkey: His Fake Book both authors utilize nonlinear temporality to explore the depths of cultural memory and history that extend far beyond Americas geographical borders. Drawing connections respectively to the African American and Chinese American diasporas, Morrison and Kingston simultaneously challenge hegemonic constructions of American history while also creating communities that possess the potential to heal each cultural groups history of exclusion.
