Abstract
Of great importance in the history of the solidification of agricultural and industrial workforces in Brazil, the Italian immigrant helped the development of the Southern and Southeastern regions in Brazil. These immigrants also served as characters in several literary works in the 1920s. Coinciding with the onset of the Modernist Movement, the ever-increasing presence of such characters in the context of residents of So Paulo were ignored by many writers of that time. Antnio de Alcntara Machado is considered the spokesman of the Italian presence in So Paulo. With his journalistic style, he depicted such characters as if they were in a picture formed by words. However, the way these immigrants were depicted in Brs, Bexiga e Barra Funda, his masterpiece, indicates that such immigrants went through the process of acculturation. That was due to their intention to integrate to the society of that time. This depiction implies a certain superiority of the paulistano citizen when compared to the Italian immigrant as well as other aspects presented in this study.
