Abstract
Leñero's literary work goes through a process of growth and maturity as he lives his own experience intertwined with his country's history. His realist novels highlight the social marginalization of certain social sectors and the human decadence to which poverty drives them. As modernization expands, Leero sees a growing gap among the social classes. An institutionalized violence finds its way through the new ruling class and the ecclesiastical hierarchy. Through his literary work, the author reveals the nature of oppression and its consequences that may turn human beings into oppressors and create a cycle that perpetuates inequality and mutual domination. The novels and short stories of Leero, in conjunction with Documentos de Medelln and Gustavo Gutirrez, propose a social commitment to create social awareness and eradicate violence. He sees the need for the church to undertake a new position based on the unmistakably changing times and needs of its people.
