Abstract

Landscape migration tracks shifting and changing environments. When applied as a design lens to decommissioned coal-fired powered plants, landscape migration reveals valuable research opportunities that rehabilitate ecosystem integrity through regenerative design. Several research design methods informed data collection for analysis (research for design) and design precedent studies, which contributed to guideline development (research on design). The resulting framework demonstrates the integration of regenerative design with standard decommissioningactivities by evaluating three study sites in Southeast Michigan scheduled for decommissioning in 2023 and the proposal of transforming them into hybrid landscapes through phased implementation design plans (research by design). Resulting design applications and landscape performance evaluation reveal design responses capable of yielding regenerative, hybrid landscapes that value a new ecological trajectory within the urban fabric.
