Abstract

This thesis proposes that twentieth century kitchens are valuable resources for historic research. It supplies a methodology for approaching the study of these rooms with an eye toward women's history, African-Amerian studies, social history and material culture. It reveals encouraging results from a survey of house-museums that show a trend toward recognizing and interpreting kitchen spaces. The background information and methodology offer guidance on how to approach and analyze a kitchen for historical research.
