In my thesis, Pausanias Periegesis will form the base for an exploration of the context and meaning of fifth century B.C.E. Greek war memorials in the landscape of Greece in the second century C.E. By examining the context and function of war memorials in Pausanias Periegesis along with their material remains, I draw conclusions about the different intentions of commemorating war, as well as the significance of a war memorials topographical location. Understanding these connections will lead to a wider understanding of the social memory of war in Greece, and particularly in Roman Greece of the second-century C.E. as constructed by Pausanias.
