Abstract
This paper investigates the supply cost of woodchips for bioenergy production from an experimental growth tract on the Department of Energys Savannah River Site (SRS) in South Carolina. The goal of the study was to assess the operations involved in chipping biomass on a traditionally roundwood only harvest site. The site was an attractive option because of its proximity to a bioenergy plant. The costs of supplying woodchips included the cost of stumpage, loading and chipping, and hauling. Different hauling values and feedstock type impacted the cost most significantly. The clear-cut system cost examined ranged from $7.81 to $11.97 per green ton for pine pulpwood $5.71 to $9.88 per green ton for mixed hardwoods.
