Abstract

PURPOSE: Characterize the activation of a muscle during whole body activity as a percent of the maximum oxidative rate (mVO2max) using near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS). METHODS: Ten participants completed a progressive work test and whole body activities, while NIRS data was collected from the vastus lateralis muscle. Arterial occlusions following each exercise determined metabolic rate (mVO2). mVO2max was extrapolated from the resulting curve. The mVO2 of each exercise was characterized as a percent of mVO2max. RESULTS: mVO2max had similar variation (ICC = 0.95, CV = 6.4 %) to NIRS measures of oxidative metabolism. Lunges showed a high reliability (ICC = 0.81, CV = 10.2 %). CONCLUSION: Arterial occlusions and NIRS were found to be a reliable method to determine mVO2max and to characterize the mVO2 of a muscle during whole body activities. This method may be used to further research on mitochondrial activation within a single muscle during whole body exercise.
