Postmemory plays an important role in the depiction of modern Poland in contemporary German literature. While a number of authors have written on this topic, the autobiographical works of Monika Maron and Katja Petrowskaja are exemplary models of the application of postmemory in literature. In my thesis, I will analyze Monika Marons Pawels Briefe (1998) and Katja Petrowskajas Vielleicht Esther (2014). Both authors are influenced by the loss of family members during the Holocaust. In their works, they attempt to reconstruct their families histories. Marons and Petrowskajas narrators travel to various cities in Poland in order to gain a better understanding of their families histories. During these journeys, they visit memorial sites, archives, libraries and converse with Poles. The goal of my thesis is to analyze the differences between their perceptions of Poland and the origin of these differences.
