The purpose of this study was to examine the practice of utilizing existing historic structures for campus expansion as well as to provide samples of the various types of economic resources that exist for funding preservation endeavors of this variety. The efforts of two specific institutions are presented as case studies in order to analyze successful examples of campus expansion through adaptive reuse. Georgia State Universitys School of Music and School of Business are both discussed with regards to their preservation efforts concerning the Empire Building, the Hass-Howell Building, the Standard Building, and the Rialto Theater. Georgia College and State Universitys rehabilitation of the old Milledgeville Train Depot and Governors Mansion are also presented as good examples of campus preservation efforts. Following these case studies is a presentation of economic funding sources for college and university preservation efforts and a number of recommendations for institutions that are interested in pursuing preservation as an alternative to new construction.
