Abstract
Individuals aged 65 and over are an increasingly predominant portion of the population and are largely sedentary; a trend associated with increasing costs for health and long-term care. Physical activity is a proven means of increasing older adults functional ability and decreasing their risk of morbidity from diseases commonly associated with older age. Public parks are free and prevalent settings appropriate for the provision of facilities that promote physical activity. Although public parks are beginning to provide exercise equipment, little is known about their efficacy with the older adult population. This thesis synthesizes research from multiple disciplines to provide design recommendations for outdoor fitness areas that are suitable for older adults.
