Abstract

The Vertically Integrated Project (VIP) program was developed to involve more students in research by structuring them into teams unified by an ultimate research question. Our group collaboratively works in teams to characterize the metabolome of Caenorhabditis elegans strains. Understanding this genome to metabolome connection using systems biology omic driven methodology will provide novel insight into human metabolism and genetics that could lay the foundation for training the future researchers and practitioners of precision medicine. The VIP project offers the opportunity for students to learn the importance of experimental repetition, reproducibility, statistical power, and the trial and error that is the nature of scientific research. The focus of this work is to highlight the work conducted to develop the best practice to educate and train the future practitioners and researchers of omics research and precision medicine through the effectiveness of the quality and reproducibility of the metabolomics data generated.
