Abstract
This thesis examines the propaganda of Fascist Italy by contextualizing its relation to Augustan Rome through specific monuments liberated in the early 20th century. In chapter one, I discuss the construction of Via dellImpero and the subsequent liberation of the Roman Fora surrounding it. I then consider this project in contrast to Augustus own building program, including the Fora of Caesar and Augustus and his temples. In chapter 2, I discuss the construction of the Piazza Imperatore Augusto. Within the context of this project, I examine the liberation of the Mausoleum of Augustus and reconstruction of the Ara Pacis Augustae as preparation for the Mostra Augustea della Romanit. I contextualize these projects by examining their construction under the Augustan regime in the 1st century BCE. I then consider the culmination of Mussolinis propaganda program for Fascist Italy: Via Del Mare, Via della Conciliazione and Esposizione Universale Roma.
