Abstract

This study aims to compare the subsurface and pedestrian methods used in Phase Iarchaeological survey in B. F. Grant Memorial Forest, Putnam County, Georgia. The goal is todetermine the most efficient and effective method of survey for the identification ofarchaeological sites for the B. F. Grant Memorial Forest environment. The project wasconducted in Area 4 at Stand 217, a 19.91 hectare pine tree stand. A subsurface survey methodwas employed at 30 meter intervals. A total of 226 shovel test pits were dug with sevenarchaeological sites identified. Three sites were Late Mississippian, Lamar phase, one was 19thcentury historic, and three were historic rock piles. It was determined that within clearedenvironments where the substrata is disturbed from machinery approximately seven times moresites were yielded with the pedestrian survey method.
