Abstract

In this digital era, the arrival of smartphones and internet have made participation very convenient in citizen science(CS) projects. The biggest challenges of CS projects are, the inconsistent data quality which can have negative impact on project results and maintaining citizens motivation and interest in the project. Incentivization is a useful mechanism to address the above mentioned challenges in CS projects. In this research, we studied the positive impact of incentivization affects citizens participation in CS projects by conducting a survey at The University of Georgia. From the survey we concluded that participation would increase with incentives provided and developed an incentive mechanism in CyanoTRACKER app. We have designed policies that assess the value of a submitted report, discard any noisy data and allocate points for different user activities. The use of game elements such as reward points, badges, leaderboard is used to maintain users interest and motivation in participation. Our evaluation results depict that our system is very efficient in serving bulk of requests simultaneously without making any overhead in the server.
