Abstract
The focus of this thesis is to examine the transformation of Kay from his heyday in Celtic lore as a mighty warrior to his entry into Arthurian romance. A comparative analysis between the works of Chrtien de Troyes (the creator of Arthurian romance), and the later adaptations of the his tales by Hartmann von Aue and Wolfram von Eschenbach will shed light on Kays role (agent-provocateur, foil, court critic, etc.) throughout the various Arthurian romances in which he appears.
