Abstract
Franz Liszt (1811-1886) was actively engaged in transforming sacred music in the middle of the 19th century, especially for the Catholic Church. Via Crucis is a musical setting of the fourteen Stations of the Cross, written by Franz Liszt in 1879, as an offering of self-piety to the overall canon of sacred music. Liszts Via Crucis was the first of only a few compositions written to musically set this observance. The Stations of the Cross observance has a long history in the Catholic faith. Since there was no other musical setting of this observance, Liszt filled a void by composing the extended choral work Via Crucis. This project aims to renew interest in an extended work for Holy Week, and, with the creation of a flexibly orchestrated English edition, make it more accessible for singers and congregations in English-speaking churches.
