Abstract

Holy basil (Ocimum tenuiflorum, O. gratissimum) is a medicinal herb native to India that has been used to promote longevity, reduce stress and restore balance to the body. Because it is easy to grow and adapted to a wide range of growing conditions, there is potential for domestic holy basil production. The purpose of this project was to evaluate holy basil varieties for production suitability and identify any differences in essential oil composition. Fourteen varieties of holy basil were grown during the 2015 and 2016 growing seasons and compared for harvestable weight and essential oil yield. Essential oils contribute to the therapeutic properties of holy basil, and therefore the composition of the essential oils was evaluated. Four uniqueessential oil profiles were identified, and differences in harvestable weight and essential oil yield were observed, indicating there are many factors to consider when choosing a variety to grow for commercial production.
