Abstract

This study investigated how the reaffirmation of the accreditation process influences organization, strategic management, and decision-making behaviors in postsecondary institutions. Through individual interviews and document analysis, the researcher examined the academic strategy, planning, and actions that occurred in the 18-24 month period prior to reaffirmation at two comparable-sized private colleges in the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACS COC) region. Individual interviews were completed with four senior representatives at each institution. Data gathered through interviews and document analysis provided insight into the role of preparation for accreditation and the differences in institutional behaviors that may have contributed to a positive or negative reaffirmation outcome The findings showed that the reaffirmation process influenced college officials behavior related to administrative actions, organizational and human resource planning, resource allocation, and strategic change at both institutions, but the depth and breadth of activities for reaffirmation varied across the two colleges. The implications from the research suggest a multifaceted organizational approach to the reaffirmation of accreditation process be taken to improve colleges organizational environment, strategic outcome, and daily operations.
