Abstract

Previous research indicates that gender influences mentoring relationships, but samples used primarily involve male mentors with male or female protgs. Because of their different perspective and status in the workplace, female mentors likely have different experiences in mentoring relationships than male mentors. Therefore, the current study attempts to better understand female mentors mentoring relationships in order to determine how gender affects their relationships progression and outcomes. Results partially support a proposed model which delineates the influence of protg gender on female mentors reports of relational processes, relational outcomes, and career outcomes. As a result, this study contributes to a more comprehensive theory of mentoring that fosters greater knowledge of female mentors mentoring relationships and complements existing research on male mentors.
