Abstract
Rail-trails are one of the fastest growing outdoor recreation mediums in the United States. The properties of rail-trails, smooth surfaces, and low grade, make them accessible to all walks of life. This study estimated the net economic benefits and impact of the Virginia Creeper Rail Trail (VCT). An onsite survey was administered randomly to trail users exiting the trail. This survey was based on a stratified random sample based on day type and exit site. Using a Truncated Negative Binomial Model, estimated per person consumer surplus for a trip to the VCT, with opportunity cost of time valued at 0 and the wage rate was $22.78 and $38.90 respectively. Based on these estimates, the net economic value of the VCT is between $2.2 and $3.9 million. Using multiplier analysis, the total economic impact of the VCT was estimated at $1.6 million.
